Lead singer Kenny Johnson took his name from country singers Sonny James and Webb Pierce. Their repertoire included the country hits ‘Who Shot Sam’ , ‘Border Of The Blues’ and ‘You’ve Got Everything’. Not a soft and gentle country band, they brought the natural environment of Liverpool to Nashville music, it must have worked as they had a big following from both beat music and country music fans. In 1964, they changed their name to The Hillsiders and started playing the type of music they liked, contemporary country and western and became the top country band in the UK, winning polls and awards all over Europe. Kenny Johnson left in 1976 to join Northwind and continued to perform into the 1990’s.
